JKA KARATE


Karate means "empty hand" -- self-defence without weapons. Karate emphasizes unity of body, mind and spirit, operating in harmony. Karate helps to keep fit, to improve co-ordination, concentration and self-image, to boost confidence, and to develop character.

The instructor, Sensei John Selinger, is a sixth degree black belt with the Japan Karate Association (JKA), and a member of the Shihankai (Master’s Committee) of the Canada JKA Karate Federation (CJKF).. He has been practicing karate with the JKA for more than 50 years, and teaching for over 45. As an internationally certified JKA Instructor, Examiner and Judge, he is one of an elite group in Canada. Some highlights of his competition history include being Manitoba, Western Canadian, and Canadian champion. He has also represented Canada in international team competition. 
The JKA SKD Winnipeg dojo at LWCC is a member of the Japan Karate Association (JKA) (http://www.jka.or.jp/en/). The style of karate taught is JKA Shotokan karate.

Sessions This Year

JULY AND AUGUST: Classes are held on Wednesdays

  1. Wednesdays – 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. – General (yellow & up, plus adult beginners)  

SEPTEMBER TO JUNE:   Classes are held Saturdays, Mondays, and Wednesdays

  1. Saturdays – 11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. – Beginners/General (white belts & up) 
  2. Mondays – 7:00-8:00 p.m. — General (yellow & up)
  3. Wednesdays -7:00 – 8:00 p.m. – General/Advanced (yellow & up, plus adult beginners)  

* Exceptions will be considered by the instructor.
